Suggestions for pet owners

  • Identify someone to serve as a designated caretaker for the pet during the immediate emergency and for a longer transitional period, if needed. In the case of domestic abuse, the designated caretaker should not be connected to a batterer
  • Ask for help from family members, friends, friends of friends, colleagues, neighbors, members of groups, church or congregation associations, schoolmates, and others
  • Ask individuals for assistance to care for and shelter the pet for a specific time period. Some people may help if the owner can offer a small stipend, supplies, or a crate
  • Ask a veterinary clinic for free or low-cost boarding and explore additional boarding options
